Mental Health Counselling

Becoming a Parent is Hard.
You Were Never Meant to Do This Alone.

Becoming a parent is a transformative experience, but it can also be overwhelming—physically, mentally, and emotionally. In today’s world, parents are expected to do more than ever, often without the support they need. In 2024, the US Surgeon General issued a public advisory highlighting the impact of modern stressors on parental mental health. In Newfoundland and Labrador, one in four birthing people experience symptoms of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs)—higher than the national average of one in five.

It’s okay to ask for help, and it’s essential to build a strong support system during this time.

How Counselling Can Help

Whether you’re navigating preconception, pregnancy, postpartum, or adjusting to life with a new baby, therapy can help you feel supported, empowered, and emotionally resilient during your perinatal journey. Perinatal mental health counselling provides a safe and compassionate space to explore the emotions and challenges you may face.

Some common struggles during the perinatal period include:

  • Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs)

  • Feelings of worry, overwhelm, and isolation

  • Perfectionism, need for control, and self-criticism

  • Stress and conflict in relationships

  • Baby blues and postpartum rage

  • Intrusive thoughts or concerns about harming the baby

  • Identity loss or grief related to parenthood

  • Body image concerns

  • Traumatic birth or reproductive experience

You don’t have to be diagnosed with a PMAD to benefit from support. Counselling can help you feel understood, reduce overwhelming emotions, and increase your ability to adapt to the changes in your life.
